Model Trains
Model trains are miniature trains, often called train sets. Some people just buy a set as a toy for a child or have one around their Christmas tree during the Christmas season. Others are model railroading hobbyists with large collections of these small scale trains. Model trains are reduced scale railroad systems, which include the locomotives, rails, tracks, signaling and scenery so as to replicate a real system. The involvement of those in this hobby range from owning one or two sets to those who have a room in their home dedicated to the collection, which could be worth thousands of dollars. They not only collect the trains; they build various scenery layouts to make the scene as realistic as possible.
There are various size engines used in model trains. The largest rideable train of this nature is about 28 inches tall, while most are only 2 inches tall and 4 to 20 inches in length. The tracks come in different pieces and you have to snap them together. They come in straight and curved pieces and in varying lengths. When you have a tighter curve on the track, you may only be able to use smaller cars. Larger ones will jump the track as they round this curve. The track must also be fastened down because the movement of the trains will work it loose. You can arrange the tracks to form loops and crossovers with switches so that you can change tracks for different trains.
Most model train sets come with a terminal section, which is where the power to run the trains is located. Some systems have a battery pack and others plug into an electric outlet. As you build your model railroad, you may need extra power. Many of the model train manufacturers have what is called a “plug it in and wire it to the tracks” option.
Scenery is an important part of a model railroad. As a real train passes through countryside, model train collectors like to build sceneries for their trains to pass through as well. There are many different little buildings you can buy from manufacturers as well as materials for building the scenery sets. Kits provide the material for adding farm and city-like settings.
