Real Steam Train Models
Model railroad hobbyists may have started out with small trains sets that ran on batteries or that plugged into an electric outlet. However, now these same hobbyists can enjoy the sound and the action of a real steam train model with live steam. Live steam is the name given to model trains that are powered by steam under pressure in a boiler. It refers only to the power needed to move replica objects.
The Hornby real steam train model set is available in three different models. The first, which came on the market in 2003, includes the famous Mallard locomotive. Another set contains the Class A4 Mallard the third contains the Class A3 Flying Scotsman. Each of these sets comes with:
- A control box and transformer box
- A large oval track with 00 gauge
- Oil and water syringes and the protective gloves you need to wear
- Lubrication oil and distilled water
- Instructions
The price of each of these sets is currently around £210.
Mamod is another well-known name in the line of real steam train models. Along with purchasing a train set, you can buy individual locomotives such as:
- A traction engine in brass or green

All the starter fuel you need is included with your purchase of a Mamod train. There are several kits available as well, such as the Steam Roller With Canopy Kit, with which you can build your own model train set.
